Ancient Beans
Beans have been a fundamental part in the lifestyle of many cultures throughout history. Their significance has been documented back to ancient Egypt along with classical texts as the expansion and their importance has grown over time.
From ancient times to present day, beans have influenced cultures across the world. According to Republic of Beans, the use of legumes as a basic dietary staple can be traced back more than 20,000 years in some Eastern cultures. The common bean (or kidney bean), lima and pinto beans were favored among the Aztec and Inca civilizations, who cultivated the beans over 5,000 years ago.
Chickpeas
In 7th century BC, chickpeas were cooked in vegetable soup during Ancient Gaul. In the Bronze Age, chickpea deposits were found in the Mediterranean areas of Jericho and Babylon.
Lentils
The remains of lentil paste were found in 3rd century BC tombs at Thebes in Ancient Egypt. Although they were popular in some regions, lentils were known as the “poor man’s food” in Greece during 2nd century BC, where lentil soup was used for the lower class.
Fava Beans
From the information we’ve researched, it’s obvious that fava beans (historically known as faba beans) have been grown throughout history, but the knowledge of their nutritional value remained unknown until recently. The Republic of Beans has taught us, Ancient Greeks associated the dark spots on fava beans with death, and did not allow their priests to consume them. This definitely gave fava beans a bad reputation! It wasn’t until centuries later in Rome when Apicius, the creator of the world’s first cook book, shared fava bean recipes to the world.
